Arizona to disperse $8.4M for school safety
PHOENIX (AP) — A legislative oversight committee has cleared the way for the Arizona Department of Education to disperse more than $8 million to boost school safety.
Most of the money will go toward the salaries and benefits of 95 school-resource officers for more than 100 schools.
The rest of the money will pay for security upgrades and emergency planning.
The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/1buPwhX) that the schools receiving the grants were chosen two years ago through a competitive process.
The San Carlos Unified School District had two school-resources officers the previous year, but it was the only district not renewed for the coming school year. Officials say that's because the district didn't hire a qualified officer.
Officials say some schools will be expected to share their officers.
