Struggling district gets $2M emergency state loan
BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The state has given a struggling Michigan school district that might not open in the fall a $2 million loan to pay off another loan it has from the state.
The Saginaw News reports (http://bit.ly/15dTcQ0 ) Board of Education members in the Buena Vista School District near Saginaw on Tuesday voted to finalize the loan.
The original loan helped cover costs until September. Board President Randy L. Jackson says any leftover money will be used to pay teachers.
The district earlier said it wouldn't have money to pay them this summer. The district also laid off teachers and closed for part of May because it said it couldn't make payroll.
A state report has said the district has a $3.7 million budget deficit and is unlikely to open in the fall.
