Survey: Bullying reports down in Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Sioux Falls School District says bullying reports have gone down since it began a prevention model two years ago.
The Argus Leader reports (http://argusne.ws/155KHGB ) that 60.5 percent of elementary school students in a recent survey said they had not been bullied at school lately, up from 56.4 percent two years earlier. For middle school students, the number grew from 66.5 percent to 69.5 percent.
But officials say the program has not yet fulfilled its promise of empowering students to stick up for their peers.
Student support services coordinator Celeste Uthe-Burow says students identify and empathize with others who are bullied, but many reported that they don't do anything even though they think they ought to help.
She says anti-bullying teams at each school should work on that.
