Pittsburgh Plans Residency As Alternative Certification
The Pennsylvania state board of education has approved a plan by the Pittsburgh school system to create a one-year residency program as an alternative route to teacher certification.
The goal of the certification program, approved last month, is to increase the diversity of the city’s teaching force, provide an option for second-career teachers, and have more candidates for hard-to-fill positions. It will be operated in partnership with the New Teacher Project and will be part of the Teacher Academy, scheduled to open next fall at a high school and a pre-K-8 school.
Participants already will have earned a bachelors degree, officials said.
