25 Groups Across Globe Create World Research Association

Twenty-five education research groups from around the world announced plans last week to create an umbrella group called the World Education Research Association to promote studies in the field.

Scheduled to meet for the first time Sept. 25-30 in Vienna, the new group will collectively represent 60,000 researchers, according to its press release.

The association is being led by Ingrid Gogolin, an education professor from Hamburg University in Germany, and Felice J. Levine, the executive director of the American Educational Research Association, based in Washington. Ms. Gogolin and Ms. Levine will serve, respectively, as president and secretary-general, on an interim basis.

Ms. Levine, whose 25,000-member group is the largest of the partners in the confederation, said one aim of the group will be to "advance education research at a scale and significance that heretofore has not been envisioned or sought."
