Private elementary and secondary schools: 6.1 million
Charter schools: 887,000 (2004-05 school year)
Home schools: 1.1 million (2003-04 school year)
Two-and four-year colleges (full- and part-time): 18 million

EXPENDITURES:
National public elementary and secondary schools: $489.4 billion
Average per pupil: $9,969

SCHOOLS & TEACHERS
Public school teachers: 3.2 million
Public elementary and secondary schools: 97,000 (2005-06 school year)
Private school teachers: 464,000
Private elementary and secondary schools: 28,000 (2003-04 school year)
