Participating in engaged-learning activities such as interacting with faculty members and working on group projects has a positive effect on college students’ grades and increases the odds that they will return for a second year, a study concludes.

The report, from the National Survey of Student Engagement, also says that the benefits of student engagement are even more pronounced for minority students and those who come to college less prepared than others for the academic demands. The report is based on information from 260,000 randomly selected first-year and senior college students at four-year colleges and universities nationwide.
