An article on the U.S. Department of Education’s evaluation of state testing programs in the July 12, 2006, issue of Education Week said that in calculating adequate yearly progress based on 2005-06 data, New York state could not count as proficient the scores of some students with disabilities who took out-of-level tests. It should have said that the state has to change its assessments for students with disabilities and for English-language learners during the 2006-07 school year, but that it can count students who took those assessments in calculating AYP based on 2005-06 data.
