Teacher Educator Awards

The Arlington, Va.-based American Association of School Administrators annually recognizes best practices in public education and individuals who have contributed significantly to the lives and learning of children. The 2006 winners are listed below.

Child Care Awards

The Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation, based in King of Prussia, Pa., recently announced its 2006 National Child Care Teacher of the Year. Tammy Helman, a prekindergarten teacher at theTender Care Learning Center, in New Kensington, Pa., received a $2,000 cash award and a $500 shopping spree at Bloomingdale’s in King of Prussia, where the awards luncheon was held. Ms. Helman is one of 50 National Child Care Teacher award winners. The national winners—who each received a $1,000 cash prize—are listed below by state.

Outstanding Young Educator

Charles Coleman, the principal of Khowhemun Elementary School in Duncan, British Columbia, has been named the 2005 Outstanding Young Educator of the Year by the Alexandria, Va.-based Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Since 2002, when Mr. Coleman became principal, the percentage of students at the K-6 school meeting or exceeding expectations on the British Columbia Performance Standards has increased from 67 to 83 percent in reading and from 65 to 89 percent in mathematics.

Teacher Educator Awards

The Reston, Va.-based Association of Teacher Educators has announced the winners of its 2006 awards. The organization recognizes individuals and state affiliates across the country that have contributed to the improvement of teacher education for K-12 and postsecondary instructors.
