Career and Technical Education
The Alexandria, Va.-based Association of Career and Technical Educationhas announced its 2005-06 awards. The awards honor the work of career and technical teachers across the country.
2006 National Teacher of the Year: Kevin English, Peoria High School, Peoria, Ariz.
Arch of Fame: Scott Olsen, Jordan Unified School District, Salt Lake City.
Award of Merit: Meta Kay West, Abilene High School, Abilene, Kan.
Outstanding Career and Technical Educator: Curtis B. Helmandollar, Roanoke County Public Schools, Roanoke, Va.
Outstanding New Career and Technical Teacher: Betsey R. Jensen, Northland Community and Technical College, Thief River Falls, Minn.
Outstanding Service: Ann Decker, Provo City School District, Provo, Utah; Jerry Shipp, Texarkana Arkansas School District, Texarkana, Ark.
Outstanding Teacher in Community Service: Dawn Renee Gary, Youngsville Middle School, Youngsville, La.
The Washington-based Fordham Foundation has presented the 2006 Fordham Prizes for Excellence in Education. Each award carries a $25,000 cash prize.
Caroline M. Hoxby, a distinguished visiting fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institute and a professor of economics at Harvard University, received the Excellence in Education Distinguished Scholarship award.
David Levin and Michael Feinberg, co-founders of the Knowledge Is Power Program, or KIPP, shared the Excellence in Education Valor award.
Mark Faloni is the recipient of the 2006 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year award, presented by Toyota, the Torrance, Calif.-based automaker, and the National Center for Family Literacy, based in Louisville, Ky. Mr. Faloni, a teacher at Bancroft Elementary School in Washington, receives a trip to NCFL’s national conference in March, and his school receives a $5,000 grant.
Philip Forgit, a 4th-grade teacher at Rawls Byrd Elementary School in Williamsburg, Va., and a U.S. Navy reservist currently serving in Iraq, received The National Education Association Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. His wife, Dawn Forgit, accepted the $35,000 award on his behalf.
The Washington-based foundation also recognized the four other finalists for the award and they received $10,000 each in cash prizes. The four other finalists are: James D. Harris, Atkins Junior High School, Lubbock, Texas; Donna McCreadie, Temple City High School, Temple City, Calif.; Kathleen H. Thomas, Caesar Rodney High School, Camden, Del.; Stephanie Winkler, White Hall Elementary School, Richmond, Ky.
Service to Youth Awards
The National Child Labor Committee, based in New York City, recently presented its annual awards, which recognize service in the business and education communities on behalf of children and youth.
Distinguished Service Awards: Frank A. Bennack, Jr., chairman of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and vice chairman of the board, The Hearst Corporation; Geoffrey T. Boisi, chairman and senior partner of Roundtable Investment Partners LLC, and chairman and co-founder of MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership; Ray Chambers, philanthropist, and co-founder of MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership; and Laurie M. Tisch, philanthropist, cultural arts leader, and founding chairperson of The Center for Arts Education.
Lewis Hine Awards: James Piper Bond, Baltimore; Cecily Coleman, Albany, N.Y.; Glenn and Pat Doughty, Locust Grove, Okla.; Helen Fox, Albuquerque, N.M.; Scott Bernard Peterson, Washington; Ronald Powell, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Marilyn Isaacson Simonds, Auburn, Maine; Joyce Sonn and Robert Brandhorst, St. Louis; Helena Stephens, Seattle; and Russell Sullivan, Washington.
Ronald H. Brown Award: Edward Lewis, founder of Essence.
Teacher Education Awards
The Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education presented Maryville University of St. Louis’ school of education with its 2006 Models of Excellence Award at the association’s annual meeting in San Diego in January. The award honors the university’s work on partnerships between K-12 schools and teacher- and administrator-education programs.
