News in Brief: A State Capitals Roundup
California Leaders Agree on $116 Billion State Budget
California’s Democratic legislative leaders and Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced last week that they had agreed to a $116 billion budget plan.
According to the governor’s office, the budget for fiscal 2006 will give $3 billion more for K-12 schools and community colleges and exceed the requirements of Proposition 98, the state’s minimum-funding guarantee for schools. It also will not raise taxes and avoids a deficit.
The chambers approved the plan July 7.
