“Quality Teaching Initiatives in Kentucky: A Progress Report” is available online, as well as an executive summary, from the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. ()

Kentucky needs to do much more to get a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, contends a report on competent teaching released by the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, a school advocacy group based in Lexington.

The five-year assessment concludes that the state should connect compensation with demonstrated skills, and give teachers the opportunity to earn salaries that are more competitive with other professions’.

The report also recognized that the state should produce performance-based relicensure exams for teachers and ensure alignment between teacher preparation and the “real world” of schools. Kentucky should also improve the gathering and management of information on teacher shortages and hiring practices, it adds.
