Character Education Awards

The Character Education Partnership, a Washington-based coalition that supports civic education, recently honored 10 schools with its annual National Schools of Character awards. The awards recognize K-12 schools and districts with character education initiatives designed to improve student behavior, school climate, and academic performance. Each winner received a $2,000 cash award. Recipients are listed below alphabetically.

Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School, Raliegh, N.C.; Carrollwood Day School, Odessa, Fla.; Community of Peace Academy, St. Paul, Minn.; Izard Elementary School, Van Buren, Ariz.; Montclair Kimberly Academy, Montclair, N.J.; Penn Valley Elementary School, Levittown, Pa.; Phillip R. Smith Elementary School, South Windsor, Conn.; St. Geneviere High School, Panorama City, Calif.; Thomas A. Edison Community School, Port Chester, N.Y.; Walnut Middle School, Grand Island, Neb.

International Education Award

The Asia Society and the Goldman Sachs Foundation have recognized five K-12 and college education agencies as model international education programs. The foundation awarded its inaugural Prize for Excellence in International Education late last month. Each winner received a $25,000 award. The recipients are listed below by category.

Elementary/Middle School: John Stanford International School, Seattle, Wash.

High School: Evanston Township High School, Evanston, Ill.

Higher Education: Asian Studies Outreach Program, University of Vermont, Burlington, Vt. State: North Carolina.

Media and Technology: International Education and Resource Network, New York, N.Y.; and Sesame Workshop’s Global Grover, New York, N.Y.

Education’s Unsung Heroes Awards

The International Nederlanden Group, a global financial institution better known as ING, recently honored 100 teachers from 39 states with its 2003 Education’s Unsung Heroes Awards. The awards recognize K-12 educators who improve student achievement through innovative teaching techniques and programs. Each finalist received a $2,000 grant for his or her program. The top three award winners were honored with additional grants totaling $46,000. The top three award winners are listed below.

First Place: Jennifer Wise, Dorothy Thomas Center Middle School, Tampa, Fla.

Second Place: David Knight, Lancaster High School, Lancaster, S.C.

Third Place: Emily Glodowski, Oak Glen High School, New Cumberland, W. Va.

2004 President’s Technology Awards

The American Association of School Administrators and Apple, Inc. have announced that 18 public school superintendents will receive 2004 President’s Technology Awards. The awards, which will be presented on Feb. 19, recognize leadership in educational technology and successful technology integration in schools.

Other Honors and Awards

Wal-mart recently honored Sherry Sheffield Davis, a middle school teacher at Tupelo Middle School in Tupelo, Miss., as its 2003 National Teacher of the Year. Ms. Davis received a $10,000 award for her school, a plaque, and a collection of professional development publications.

On Nov. 15, the National Council for the Social Studies honored Jana S. Eaton, a social studies teacher at the 3,800-student Unionville-Chadds Ford School District in Kennett Square, Pa., with its inaugural Award for Global Understanding. The award honors social studies educators who dramatically improve the global education of students. She received a $2,000 award.

The National Center for Family Literacy and Toyota recently honored Lorie Preheim as the 2004 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year. Ms. Preheim, an adult education teacher at Mary’s Center for Maternal and Child Care, Inc. in Washington, will receive a $5,000 award for her institution’s literacy program.
