The Council for Basic Education recently named Joseph Bruce Latta as the organization's vice president of policy, standards, and instruction.

Mr. Latta, 37, formerly served as the vice president of operations for New York City-based Edison Schools Inc., the nation's largest for-profit manager of public schools.

The Washington-based council offers programs and publications aimed at strengthening the liberal arts in public schools.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has announced that Joan Packer Isenberg will serve as the organization's visiting scholar for higher education initiatives.

Ms. Isenberg, a professor of education at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., will take a one-year leave of absence from that post to work with the national board. During that time, she will explore ways to incorporate the board's standards and assessments into teacher education programs.

The NBPTS, an independent, nonprofit organization based in Arlington, Va., offers national credentials to teachers who undergo a certification process to demonstrate they have met the board's standards.

Linda M. Espinosa

Linda M. Espinosa, an associate professor of early-childhood and elementary education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., recently became a co-director of research and policy for the National Institute for Early Education Research.

The institute, which is based at Rutgers, aims to provide nonpartisan research to improve the education of 3- and 4-year-olds across the nation.
