Erick Matthews takes center stage at Fruitvale Elementary School here for a final rehearsal for the districtwide oratorical contest.

"Attitude, Erick!" a teacher, directing him from the back of the auditorium, shouts. "Remember, this is about attitude."

Shifting into character, he conjures up the posture and perspective of a man proud of his accomplishments, assured of his talent, and impenitent of his scholarly achievements.
