Elmer B. McPherson will succeed Kenneth Arndt as the superintendent of the 10,600-student Decatur school district in Illinois on July 1. The Decatur board of education awarded Mr. McPherson, 51, a five-year contract at an annual salary of $116,000. He has served as an assistant superintendent in the district since 1996.

Mr. Arndt, 46, whose administration was marked by protests in 1999 over the expulsions of several African-American students, has accepted a job as the superintendent of the 17,200-student Carpentersville school district near Chicago.

Herbert M. Berg

The Association for the Advancement of International Education's board of trustees has hired HerbertM. Berg to be the group's new executive director. Mr. Berg, 60, plans to leave his current position as the superintendent of the 11,200-student Alexandria, Va., district Aug. 31, a year before his contract with the district expires. The AAIE is a Washington-based organization that serves the needs of about 600 administrators of American international schools by providing training for administrators, teachers, and subject specialists.

Ronald P. Colarusso

Ronald P. Colarusso was named the dean of Georgia State University's college of education this month. Mr. Colarusso, 60, has served as the interim dean of the 3,700-student college of education in Atlanta since June of last year. Before becoming interim dean, Mr. Colarusso was the chairman of the college's department of educational psychology and special education. Georgia State has 24,000 students, and its college of education produces nearly 500 teachers annually.
