David Ward

David Ward has been chosen as the new president of the American Council on Education. Mr. Ward, 62, is the chancellor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the director of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education.

In his new job, which begins Sept. 1, he will succeed Stanley O. Ikenberry, who is retiring.

The Washington-based council serves colleges and universities by offering a forum for discussion of issues that affect the quality of higher education, as well as representing them before Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Marie E. Theobald, the former project director of the Title II teacher-quality-enhancement project for the Indiana Professional Standards Board, has been appointed the executive director of the board.

Ms. Theobald, 46, was selected by Gov. Frank O’Bannon and began her duties last month.

The standards board is an Indianapolis-based agency that oversees the testing, licensing, preparation, and relicensing of all Indiana teachers.

Beacon Education Management Inc. has hired Cheryl Lynn King to be the vice president for education. Ms. King, 50, will oversee curriculum development, educational assessment, and staff development for the Westborough, Mass.-based firm.

Ms. King previously served as deputy superintendent for instruction in the 23,000-student Flint, Mich., school district. Beacon helps public schools with financial planning, accounting, human resources, and other services.
