The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently awarded $12.5 million in grants to Minnesota for the support of initiatives that provide learning environments that encourage achievement.

A grant of $4.5 million was made to create 15 new schools combining the Minnesota New Country School instructional approach and the EdVisions Cooperative teacher-owner governance model.

Another grant, for nearly $8 million, was awarded to the Center for School Change at the University of Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs to create small, focused schools within larger high schools.

The AT&T Foundation recently awarded a two-year, $200,000 grant to Colonial Williamsburg's Electronic Field Trips project. The field trips use distance-learning technologies to reach classrooms in 46 states.

The grant will support improvements to Colonial Williamsburg's Web site, equipment, programming, and research.

The Kauffman Foundation has awarded a five-year $9.6 million grant to the Kansas City, Kansas, shool district's "First Things First" program. The grant will support the initiative's seven goals for improvement: smaller class size, longer class periods, high academic standards, conduct standards, diverse learning, instructional autonomy, and incentives for teachers

The Institute's office of educational research and improvement announced a grant of $11 million to the National Center for Early Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The grant will fund a study of the academic and social-preparation standards of pre-kindergarten programs that are linked to public schools. The study also will examine transition activities that aid the move into kindergarten.
