Alan Brown has been selected the new superintendent of the 27,000-student Rockford, Ill., public schools. Mr. Brown, 51, previously served as the superintendent of the 105,000-student Milwaukee district.

The Clark County, Ark., school district has named Lewis Holloway as its new superintendent. Mr. Holloway, 46, is expected to take up his post with the 11,000-student district July 1. He formerly served as the superintendent of the 6,600-student Bentonville, Ark., district.

Donnie Griffin has been elected the chairman of the Oregon state school board.

Mr. Griffin, 47, is the director of human resources and the organization-development director for the Oregon Department of Human Resources. He is slated to begin his one-year term next month.

Robert Hughes has been appointed the president and chief executive officer of New Visions for Public Schools, a nonprofit organization that works with the New York City schools to raise student achievement.

Mr. Hughes, 38, will begin his new job in September. He is the deputy director of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, a coalition seeking to overhaul New York state’s education finance system.

The Great Books Foundation has tapped Peter S. Temes as its president. Mr. Temes, 34, previously worked as the senior vice president and chief editor for Edgate.com, an education portal site on the World Wide Web.

Great Books, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization, works with more than 1 million students and 1,000-plus adult reading groups to teach “shared inquiry,” a method of interpretive reading and discussion.
