Articles on testing, desegregation, and early-childhood education are among the winners of the 1999 National Awards for Education Reporting, announced last week by the Education Writers Association.

The awards, honoring coverage of education by print and broadcast journalists, were chosen from 459 entries and were selected by a panel of reporters, editors, college professors, and educators.

First-place winners will receive $250 and a plaque. Second-place winners will receive a certificate.

An overall award chosen from among the winners, the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting, will be presented at the EWA’s annual convention in Atlanta next month.

Education Week received a special citation in the special interest/trade publication category, to which the newspaper is assigned, for its yearlong series about the development of public education over the past 100 years, Lessons of a Century.
