James Travis

James Travis has been named the superintendent of the Ferguson-Florissant, Mo., schools, an 11,300-student district near St. Louis. Mr. Travis, 58, is the former superintendent of the Community Unit School District 200 in Illinois. Previously, he was the superintendent of schools for the Madison metropolitan schools in Madison, Wis., for six years.


Jerome T. Murphy

Harvard University’s graduate school of education has awarded Jerome T. Murphy, the school’s current dean, the inaugural position of the Harold Howe II chair in education. When Mr. Murphy retires, the professorship, awarded last month by the university’s president, Neil Rudenstine, will be renamed the Jerome T. Murphy chair in education. Mr. Murphy was instrumental in creation of the program for urban superintendents.


Richard F. Barbacane

Richard F. Barbacane, the principal of Buehrle Alternative School in Lancaster, Pa., is the new president-elect of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He will serve as the president of the 28,000-member organization for a one-year term beginning in July 2000. Mr. Barbacane, 52, began his career as a special education teacher in 1970. He has has also served as a member of the U.S. Department of Education’s Title I Negotiating Rulemaking Committee.


Elizabeth Duffy

The Ball Foundation of Glen Ellyn, Ill., has named Elizabeth Duffy its executive director. Ms. Duffy has worked for the Woodrow Wilson Foundation since 1997. The Ball Foundation is a 25-year-old education and research foundation that also sponsors three charter schools in Illinois.
