Highlights:
- Two-year budget package includes $800 million over 10 years to repay school districts for previously underfunded, state-mandated special education programs. Legislators also passed $9.7 billion K-12 school budget for fiscal 1999.
- Approved $100,000 in fiscal 1998 for planning grants to reduce class sizes. Will increase to $20 million in fiscal 1999.
- Spending on programs for at-risk students will increase from $230 million last year to $250 million in fiscal 1998 and $260 million in 1999.
