A new resource book offers parents and educators a comprehensive listing of nontraditional education options available in the United States.
The Handbook of Alternative Education lists more than 7,000 public and private school alternatives for preschoolers through college students.
Schools listed include parent cooperatives, magnet schools, public at-risk alternatives, and charter schools.
The handbook also features an overview of the alternative-schooling movement, vignettes of student experiences, and a bibliography for additional reading.
The author, Jerry Mintz, is the director of the Alternative Education Resource Organization in Roslyn Heights, N.Y.
The 432-page hardcover book costs $75. In January, the price will increase to $90. Ordering information is available from Macmillan Reference Publishing at (800) 257-5755.
Building a community among the diverse members of a school--teachers, students, parents, administrators--is an ongoing challenge confronting all educational institutions.
The School Community Journal, a biannual publication, is designed to help these diverse players form a viable educational community.
The Center for the School Community created the journal in 1991. The organization propounds the idea that “when the school functions as a community rather than in a community, its constituents associate with one another and hold common values about the education of children.”
Recent articles appearing in the journal feature such topics as ability grouping, measuring parent involvement, business partnerships, and teacher empowerment.
Unsolicited manuscripts are welcome. For complete details, write to: Editor, The School Community Journal, 121 North Kickapoo St., Lincoln, Ill. 62656.
Individual subscriptions cost $14 for one year; library subscriptions cost $35. Orders may be sent to the address above.
