President of Teachers' Union In Ky. Dies in Auto Crash

Marnel Moorman, the president of the Kentucky Education Association, died Oct. 14 in an automobile accident near Campton, Ky. He was 51.

Mr. Moorman taught math and science in Shelby County for 21 years before becoming a full-time state union officer in 1986. He was elected state president in 1992 and re-elected earlier this year.

During this year's legislative session, Mr. Moorman was active in pushing for higher salaries and restraint by lawmakers in adopting an overhauled teacher-certification system.

His car collided with an empty coal truck after he lost control, state police said. The other driver was not seriously injured.

Mr. Moorman had just spoken at a meeting of the Upper Kentucky River Education Association and was on his way to a KEA board meeting when the wreck occurred.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
