Final and Interim Final Rules
The Education Department published in the April 29 Federal Register final regulations for the Federal Family Education Loan Program, concerning such issues as loan discharges for students whose school is closed or falsely certifies borrower eligibility, wage garnishment of defaulters, and notification of changes in loan servicers. In two separate notices the same day, the department published final regulations on institutional eligibility for federal student-aid programs and interim final regulations spelling out such things as definition of academic years, application procedures, and the evaluation of an institution’s financial responsibility. Comments on the interim rules are due June 20.
Campus Crime and Safety
Final Rules
The Education Department published in the April 29 Federal Register final regulations implementing laws on campus-crime and -safety. The regulations, which are to take effect on July 1, require colleges and universities that are participating in the federal financial-aid programs to establish policies aimed at preventing sexual assault. The rules also require institutions to disclose statistics on campus crime.
Grant Availability
The Education Department published in the May 3 Federal Register a list of application notices for fiscal 1994 grant programs for which notices had not yet been published. The comprehensive notice includes estimated application deadlines.
