Evie Dennis, the superintendent of the Denver schools since 1990, has announced her retirement.

Ms. Dennis, 69, was the first woman and the first African-American to head the 60,000-student district.

An employee of the district since 1966, Ms. Dennis said she would step down from the job in August.
