Stuart E. Gothold, the superintendent of the Los Angeles County schools since 1979, has announced his retirement effective Sept. 1, 1994.

Mr. Gothold will become a clinical professor of education and the director of the National Institute for School Superintendents at the University of Southern California.

The Los Angeles County Office of Education provides some administrative functions for the various districts in the county, which enroll some 1.5 million students.
