Steven McAuliffe, the widower of Christa McAuliffe, the schoolteacher who was killed in the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, has been nominated by President Bush for the federal bench.

Mr. McAuliffe, who was one of the founders of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, would succeed Norman Stahl as a federal district judge for New Hampshire. His nomination must be approved by the U.S. Senate.
