The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has chosen Raymond Arveson as the new state superintendent of education.
Mr. Arveson, 71, a retired superintendent of the East Baton Rouge schools, has been acting state superintendent since Wilmer Cody resigned the post in January. He was selected from a field of five candidates for the job.
However, a new state education board is due to be elected in the fall, and board members predicted the new board might want to choose its own candidate for the position.

Sherry Dolloff, the librarian at Durham (Me.) Elementary School, received the donation in response to a letter she wrote to the author describing the library’s dire need for books and the shortage of available funds.
“Enclosed you will find a check to buy the kids some books,’' Mr. King wrote. “Get ‘em some great stories.’'
