The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has chosen Raymond Arveson as the new state superintendent of education.

Mr. Arveson, 71, a retired superintendent of the East Baton Rouge schools, has been acting state superintendent since Wilmer Cody resigned the post in January. He was selected from a field of five candidates for the job.

However, a new state education board is due to be elected in the fall, and board members predicted the new board might want to choose its own candidate for the position.

Samuel G. Sava, the executive director of the National Association of Elementary School Principals, has been named to a three-year term as chairman of the board for the Educational Research Service in Arlington, Va.

The E.R.S. is a consortium of seven major education associations that provides information services to school districts.

Stephen King, the prolific author of horror and fantasy novels, has donated $10,000 to an elementary-school library in his home town.

Sherry Dolloff, the librarian at Durham (Me.) Elementary School, received the donation in response to a letter she wrote to the author describing the library’s dire need for books and the shortage of available funds.

“Enclosed you will find a check to buy the kids some books,’' Mr. King wrote. “Get ‘em some great stories.’'
