Jay Taggart, Utah's superintendent of instruction, has resigned after 18 months in the job.

Mr. Taggart, 65, cited personal reasons for his decision.

He will be succeeded on April 1 by Scott Bean, the deputy superintendent who was unanimously appointed to the position by the state board of education immediately after Mr. Taggart announced his resignation.

Paul Jung, the superintendent of Community Consolidated School District 62 in Des Plaines, Ill., is the new president of the 18,000-member American Association of School Administrators.

Mr. Jung has led the Des Plaines schools since 1981, and previously worked in several other Illinois districts.
