The St. Paul, Minn., school board has named Curman L. Gaines, an associate superintendent for administrative services, as superintendent of schools.

Mr. Gaines, 51, will succeed David Bennett, who leaves his post July 1 to join a private educational-consulting firm.

Mr. Gaines has been with the system since 1970, and most recently oversaw the development of a voluntary integration plan with the suburban Roseville district.
