The College Board is condensing its multi-volume secondary-school guides into what may be the first authoritative directory of the 25,271 high schools across the United States.
Designed for use by everyone from parents to school administrators, the first volume of The College Board Guide to High Schools, published last month, is a collection of up-to-date information on all public and private high schools with classes through grade 12.
The 2,500-page directory lists addresses and personnel contacts, student enrollment and demographic figures, as well as curriculum information. Profiles of over 13,000 schools include facts on test-score ranges, graduation requirements, availability of special programs (such as Advanced Placement and work study), and students’ post-graduation plans.

Specialists who work with drug-addicted teenagers have a new forum for sharing ideas, practical information, and treatment approaches in this rapidly emerging field.
The Journal of Adolescent Chemical Dependency, whose first issue was published in July, will offer articles by leading specialists on the clinical aspects of drug dependency, as well as advice on prevention and intervention plans for school and community-based programs.

A nonprofit watchdog group, the California Textbook League, has created a bimonthly, ad-free newsletter devoted to reviewing textbooks.
The Textbook Letter, which premiered last March, concentrates on texts dealing with American and world history, health, geography, and the sciences.
The newsletter features two reviews of each recently published textbook surveyed, giving the reader more than one perspective for judging the merits of a potential classroom aid, its editors point out.
Each issue also contains essays on topics of interest in textbook publishing, such as state legislation and textbook-selection methods, and reviews of books chronicling the textbook industry.
