Gov. Booth Gardner of Washington, chairman of the National Governors’ Association, has appointed five Governors to serve on the Education Goals Panel.
They are Roy Romer of Colorado, who will serve as chairman of the panel for 1990-91; Evan Bayh of Indiana; Terry E. Branstad of Iowa, former chairman of the NGA; John Ashcroft of Missouri, vice chairman of the NGA; and Carroll A. Campbell of South Carolina.
Governor Gardner will also serve on the panel, which will be responsible for determining the indicators used to measure progress on the na goals and the baselines against which such progress will be judged.
President Bush has named four representatives of the Administration to the panel: Secretary of Education Lauro F. Cavazos; John H. Sununu, White House chief of staff; Richard G. Darman, director of the Office of Management and Budget; and Roger B. Porter, assistant to the President for economic and domestic policy.
According to the policy statement adopted by the governors and endorsed by President Bush, the panel also will include four Congressional leaders as ex-officio members: the Senate majority and minority leaders, the Speaker of the House or his designee, and the House minority leader.
Executive-branch officials will serve at the pleasure of the President.
Governors will serve for a two-year term, with the exception that two of the initial appointments, one from each of the two political parties, will serve a three-year term. No more than three of the governors will be from the same party.
Governor Romer said he hopes to convene a meeting of the group early next month.--LO
