The East St. Louis, Ill., board of education has mailed layoff notices to some 900 employees, including more than a third of the district's teachers.
The layoff notices to 902 of the district's 1,800 employees went out March 30.
The layoff plan was urged by state officials, who have been working with the district to help control its mounting financial problems. (See Education Week, March 29, 1989.)
School officials have expressed hope that some of the employees could be recalled before the start of the next school year. The June layoffs will affect 388 teachers and 514 noncertified employees.
