Following a local newspaper's finding that more than half the high-school football coaches in Northern Virginia say current or former players used steroids, Fairfax County, Va., school officials are increasing their efforts to curb the use of the muscle-building drugs.

Superintendent of Schools Robert R. Spillane has held a workshop on steriods for approximately 250 coaches, trainers, athletic directors, and school administrators. District officials also plan to provide materials about steriods for coaches to send to their players' homes.

Researchers have linked steriod use with kidney and liver malfunctions, cancer, and aggressive behavior.--ef
