Titles & Roles in General
Department Chairs – Includes Teacher-Leaders and Administrators. They review, select, recommend and purchase professional development and curriculum materials on a classroom and building level.
Lead Teachers - Early grade teachers who are the equivalent of Department Chairs. They exercise the same power for reviewing, selecting, recommending and purchasing, only within K-6 rather than 7-12. (These teachers consider themselves to be “Teacher-Leaders”)
Future Teacher-Leaders – Teachers in leadership programs, being groomed to function as Teacher-Leaders from their initial entry into teaching. (Refer to White Paper for information on programs supporting this method of induction.)
Curriculum Coordinators and Supervisors - Hold the title of Coordinator or Supervisor, but their ranks comprise those who also consider themselves to be Teacher-Leaders. They review, select, recommend and purchase on a building level and frequently also on a district level.
Principals – Administrators who play a key role in the advocacy for and purchase of professional development and curriculum, as well as other materials on a building level and sometimes on a district level (high level influencers). They also hold direct responsibility for actual purchase of materials on a building level. Teacher-Leaders often rely on their principals as the final step in a purchase they have recommended. Advertisers should be interested in reaching both Administrators and Teacher-Leaders (especially in terms of professional development and curriculum sales).
